You can claim land and develop your own private farm on 1 out of 4 islands.
-
St. Lucia – Caribean (13721-4240) – balanced (Resin – Suede possible)
-
Ascension – Atlantic south of West Africa (16182-5044) – balanced (Resin – Suede possible)
-
Diego Garcia – Indian Ocean (3315-5004) – great mining support (coloured ores – Master Smithy Tools possible)
-
Savaii – South Pacific east of Fidji Islands (6868-5163) – great sewing support (coloured ores – Master Smithy Tools possible; Silk Thread – Fine + Exquisite Velvet possible)
- You can see the above locations on UWO world map.
- Unalaska –(8695-2401) you need to unlock east bering sea to claim your farm here by charting 1st 3 regions of north eastern passage to EA
Unalaska has the highest overall yields of all farms and also takes less points=time to redevelop slots. My favourite location. For a list of possible goods see gangsta-uwo website (correction: pepper should be red chilies)
If you are serious about crafting you really should run your own farm and develop it well. Others might also wish to consider it. An adventurer could cultivate materials that crafting friends could use – not least to make bonus items like the Explorer’s Pickaxe for him. Same goes for maritimers. Since some products are only possible in 1 location it is no bad idea to develop a farm, even for non-crafters. Your crafting friends will be happy about a source for rare materials and be happy to craft some items for you in return.
Benefits of a farm
-
Your private farm is a free provisioning port for you (free water, food, timber, munition – rest to recover vigor – no developed plot needed for that)
-
Products from your farm are available from your warehouse from any bank in a European capital. This will cost quite a fee but is cheaper than buying at the market.
-
Some items can only be produced on private farms via town man’s recipes. If you dont have these you can only buy from players.
Farm Production
Each fully developed plot is producing a certain amount of trade goods per real day. Production has to run for a minimum of 10 days before it can be switched to another product. Production has to be changed after 30 real days of producing the same trade good. After that you have to switch to another product.
The daily yield gradually decreases. So you will get much less produce on day 25 than on day 1. The amount produced also depends on the tech level of that type of plot on your farm. It can be enhanced by farming tools which you can buy for 1,000 ducats in Faro item shop. The better farming tools are available in Gijon from the Manor Owner’s recipes. But this requires Suede and rank 10 handicraft.
Switching products can only be done in a European capital (for a fee of 100,000ducats) or on the island itself.
If you are not happy with your product range on a plot you can clear the land and re-develop it. It seems this raises the tech / productivity level faster than maintenance.
Also you may want to have a look at farm recipes. Some of these materials or items can only be crafted on a private farm. For recipes see this link to ivyro below:
http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=152&chp=86
To use these recipes you need the required tech level and have plots capable of producing the needed materials. Smithy tools for example can only be produced on farm with blue ore which practically limits this to Diego Garcia or Savaii.
Which location is best?
As always it very much depends on what you want to be doing. While UWO wiki gives a good overview in respect to the various slots that are available on each island ivyro gives a good overview of the possible products you can get (click on the name of the island to see a detailed list for that island).
http://unchartedwaters.wikia.com/wiki/Private_Farms – for an overview which types of plots available, development costs
http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=85000010 – for a listing of possible product mix on various plot types.
The listing in ivyro shows the possible products for this farm. Those products appearing on the same line are alternative products for that plot.
If you are mainly interested in casting you would probably want to cultivate a farm on Diego Garcia. If you want to concentrate on sewing you would probably get best benefits from Savaii. This is the only place where you can produce Silk Thread and thus the only island where you can make fine and exquisite Velvet.
Suede which is only available on Ascencion or St. Lucia is needed for a number of recipes in sewing, handicraft or casting among them Explorer’s Pickaxe +2 search and the City Manor Owner’s cultivation tools recipes in Gijon. Cooking is well supported on all islands. Among the most economic recipes might be the Seafood Grill and Tuna Steaks recipes – and you can have the main ingredients Tuna, Oysters, Shrimps produced by your wharfs.
You can relocate your farm to another island. But as far as I know you have to start there from scratch. Therefore you really want to think about the location before you spend much time and money in developing your farm.
Development
Developing your farm takes a lot of time. You need to invest in your developing plots every single real day to see good progress.. The number of days it takes to develop a slot differs from type to type and possibly also from island to island.
Crafting on your private farm (town man’s recipes)
When crafting on your farm you may also get great successes unlike your aide in aide production who does not.
Especially when you have refined crafting skills that may well be worth it if you want to get the most out of your materials.
Example: improved steel sheet recipe (30 iron ore and 30 green ore) normally gives you 1 and with great success 2. But with great success and refined skill you get 3. That is 3 times as much as your aide could produce and may be worth sailing to your farm.
